Banknotes and Coins
Banknotes Series
The
Bank of Tanzania introduced a new series of banknotes in January 2011.
The Banknotes series are in the denominations of Shillings 500, 1000,
2000, 5000 and 10000.
The
previous series of banknotes issued in 2003 continues to circulate in
parallel with the new issue. These will be withdrawn from circulation
gradually until a date when they will be declared demonetized.
All banknotes issues, in the denominations of Shillings 500, 1000, 5000
and 10000, which were circulating prior to February 2003, were withdrawn
from circulation. However, they continue to be exchanged only at the
Bank of Tanzania.
Currently Circulating Coins
The current coins in circulation are as
follows: =/05, =/10, =/20, =/50, 1/=, 5/=, 10/=, 20/=, 50/=, 100/= and
200/=.
