1. Banknotes and Coins Issue

1.1    Banknotes Series:

The Bank of Tanzania circulating currency notes were first introduced into circulation in February 2003.  The Banknotes series are in the denominations of TZS. 500,1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000. 

All banknotes issues, in the denominations of TZS. 10, 20, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000, which were circulating prior to February 2003, have been withdrawn from circulation.  However, they will henceforth continue to be exchanged only at the Bank of Tanzania.

 1.2     Phased out Banknotes:

Banknotes that Ceased to be used on 30 September, 2003

1.3      Current circulating coins:

The current coins in circulation are as follows:  =/05, =/10, =/20, =/50, 1/=, 5/=, 10/=, 20/=, 50/=, 100/= and 200/=.             

 2. Pricing Policy for Collectors:

The Bank of Tanzania is currently reviewing its pricing policy for both; Banknotes and coins to collectors.  In the meantime the practice is to sell the Tanzanian currencies as follows:

2.1    Demonetised banknotes are sold at US $2.00 per one piece.

2.2   Circulating/undemonetised banknotes both, old and new issues are sold at  twice their face value or US $1.00 per one piece, whichever is higher

2.3   Coins of all issues are sold at a price of US $1.00 per one piece.  Orders of larger quantities can be considered, but at a wholesale price of not less than US $100 = per unit (bag) of 1000 pieces each

2.4   Coins made to commemorate special national and/or international events are sold to interested parties who would with to contribute towards the success of the particular theme/issue.  A piece of gold coin is selling at US$380.00; a silver coin sells at US $75.00 while nickel coin sells at US $1.00

 2.5   Depending on availability, all the above listed notes and coins issued by the Bank of Tanzania can be purchased by relevant amount as shall be advised by the Bank of Tanzania to every interested individual.  Take note that freight charges for the notes or coins purchased is payable by the buyer.
