Director’s Foreword
The Tanzania Institute of Bankers (TIOB)
was established in 1993 with the mandate
of promoting the banking profession by providing
banking education and skills to bank staff
in Tanzania. This mandate followed the liberalization
of the banking and financial sector in the
country which opened doors to private banks
and financial institutions.
In today’s economy, the banking and
financial services industry is one of the
fastest growing sectors, making it more
important than ever for banking and financial
professionals to acquire the skills and
knowledge they need to stay on top of change
and excel in serving their customers. It
is for this reason that during the Annual
General Meeting of the TIOB in March 2000
members, having acknowledged the lack of
banking education and skills, felt the need
to provide banking education and skills
development for their staff. They recommended
for the TIOB to launch training programmes
aimed at meeting their training needs.
During the first half of this year (2002),
the Institute undertook a Training Needs
Assessment within banks and financial institutions
to enable TIOB and its members to design
training programmes aimed at solving performance
problems within banks and so filling knowledge
and skills gaps of bank staff. As an outcome
of the Training Needs Assessment, the Institute
has designed a five year training programme
beginning 2003. The programme is known as
“Continuing Banking Education Programme”.
It is specifically designed to meet the
training needs of Clerical and Supervisory
staff as well as Managers of different levels.
In other words, the programme caters for
the needs of all the staff in the banking
industry.
As an industry-based educational institution,
the Institute prides itself in staying closely
attuned to those it serves. This means nurturing
a close relationship with its members to
proactively identify emerging training and
education needs. We pay careful attention
to what members say and we will continue
to develop a comprehensive, quality knowledge
base that reflects our members’ needs.
We take this opportunity to launch the “Continuing
Banking Education Programme” commencing
in year 2003. We are confident that the
programme will provide members with the
educational opportunities they need to foster
their continued personal and professional
growth in the banking and financial sector.
